The Commitment to America: What it is and what it means

In September of 2022, Kevin McCarthy rolled out a makeshift platform called the Commitment to America. Modeled after Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, the CTA lists actions Republicans vow to take when in the majority. Now with a House majority and the speakership, Republicans have the power to at the very least introduce many of the policies and objectives described in the CTA during the 118th Congress.
The CTA is condensed into a singular page, with four main categories including several subcategories.
The four main categories are: “An Economy that is Strong,” “A Nation that is Safe,” “A Future That’s Built on Freedom,” and “A Government That’s Accountable.
“An Economy That’s Strong” covers economic and inflation-related issues. It includes cutting wasteful government spending that is raising the price of basic goods, maximizing domestic production of energy and gas, strengthening supply chains, and ending dependence on foreign nations.
“A Nation That’s Safe” section covers international and domestic security and safety. It covers various ways to increase border security in response to the border crisis, different strategies to reduce crime at home and improve police forces, and various means to defend national security in various foreign conflicts.
“A Future That’s Built on Freedom” third section covers a mix of policy objectives ranging from education rights to healthcare and big tech. It calls for parental choice in children’s school curriculum, improved healthcare with better access and affordability, and accountability measures to ensure big tech is fair and safe.
“A Government That’s Accountable” is the fourth and final section that covers government accountability and reform. It calls for strengthened constitutional freedoms, an end to proxy voting, better-funded social security and Medicare welfare programs, and a restoration of good Congressional public policy.
Key staffers in McCarthy’s office that we talked to confirmed that the sections were message and poll-tested, indicating these four sections illustrate what voters felt the most passionate about.
The Commitment to America was well-received, but not all Republican voters were aware of it. Though it is brief, it provides key Republican priorities and sheds a light on what the next two years might look like with a Republican House majority and what a Republican Party Platform might focus on in 2024.
