A letter from our Executive Treasurer

W&L Mock Convention has developed into the time-honored tradition of accuracy and excellence that it is today because of the generous support of so many alumni, parents, faculty, and friends of Washington and Lee University. Each convention, we continue to rely on the generous support of our donors as we seek to further Mock Convention’s legacy.

When students were first inspired to hold a mock convention after William Jennings Bryan’s motivational visit to campus in 1908, they had no idea of the institution that they would create. Though much has changed since that first convention, we continue many of the same practices begun then.

Each convention, we strive to bring dynamic and inspirational speakers to the Washington and Lee campus and to the Lexington community to energize our students and spark excitement for the democratic process. We remain dedicated to involving every student in the Mock Convention, and ensuring that it is amongst their most valued experiences at Washington and Lee. And, we continue to offer predictions rooted in fact and unhindered by political bias.

In doing so, we count on the contributions from our generous community to further this endeavor. W&L Mock Convention, today, is a more expensive undertaking than ever before. The cost of bringing the speakers that we value so highly to campus continues to rise, as does the cost to maintain such convention traditions as the Convention Parade, the Presidential Gala, and Spring Kick-off.

Though we are fortunate to have the financial support of Washington and Lee University and various foundations, these sources of revenue cover only 59 percent of Convention expenses; we rely on individual contributions to cover the remaining 41 percent.
